Dr. Gavero’s Treatment Approach
Psychiatry
I care for patients with a wide range of mental health conditions, from mild distress (i.e., brief anxiety or sadness) to severe and chronic psychiatric conditions (i.e., schizophrenia, bipolar, long-standing depression). One of the goals of treatment is to identify possible underlying medical causes of mental illness. I may encourage patients to make lifestyle changes, take medications/obtain bloodwork or labs if needed, use other specialized community resources and providers, or explore other medical/psychiatric treatment modalities. I help them understand how their bodies and brains work so that they can make confident and informed decisions about their health. After all, our health impacts how we face life each day.
Prescribing
I am committed to a thoughtful and safe prescribing practice. We will consider the use of medications if needed to achieve your health goals. Certain conditions require specialized care outside of my scope of practice, such as that of an Addiction Psychiatrist or rehabilitation program (i.e., for primary substance use disorders requiring Buprenorphine or long-term use of Benzodiazepines). If your condition requires controlled medications, such as stimulants or sedatives, we will determine a safe time course of use and taper off if appropriate. Prescriptions are sent directly to your local pharmacy. Hawaii Prescription Monitoring Program (a database that tracks how controlled prescriptions are filled) is checked regularly to ensure the responsible use of controlled medications.
Psychotherapy
Also known as talk therapy, this is a powerful tool that can help overcome challenges that keep you from achieving your goals in different areas of your life. For some conditions, there is strong evidence that symptoms improve by combining medications with psychotherapy. It is highly beneficial with or without the use of medicines. Psychotherapy is one of the reasons I fell in love with Psychiatry. It is incredible to link this with medical knowledge to maximize the mind’s ability to make sense of our problems and uncover our potential to overcome them. I combine techniques from various psychotherapy forms to best approach your situation and sensibility, which tends to evolve through treatment.
